Community Game Drives in Luambe National Park
Time Frame: 2018 – Ongoing
Partners: Chitungulu Foundation, Luambe Camp, Caring for Conservation Fund,
Geographical Range: Chitungulu Chiefdom, Lumimba Game Management Area, Luambe National Park
Project Lead: Tom Riffel, Chris Brugman, Stephen Nkatha
Objectives:
- Offer practical and local-led conservation education to school children in Chitungulu
In many villages adjacent to wildlife areas, residents often perceive wild animals as pest species due to frequent conflicts involving crop and livestock raids or potential threats to human safety. Recognizing the need to reshape these perspectives, Nsanga Conservation collaborates with the Chitungulu Foundation, which has established conservation clubs at two schools within the Chitungulu Community. These conservation clubs, led by local naturalists, play a crucial role in educating children about the captivating ecological diversity of their surroundings. The Chitungulu Foundation goes a step further by providing opportunities for high-achieving students to visit a university or undergo guiding training, financially supported by the foundation.
Leveraging the established safari infrastructure in Luambe National Park, Nsanga, in collaboration with the tourism lodge Luambe Camps and Conservation, organizes game drives for the Conservation Clubs of the Chitungulu Foundation within the park. This initiative is pivotal as it allows children to witness wildlife in a peaceful and natural setting, in stark contrast to the encounters in their villages. These experiential learning opportunities not only reinforce the conservation education provided in the clubs but also offer an enjoyable and enriching experience for the children, fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife and nature.
To date, more than 200 pupils from over 7 schools were able to witness the diverse wildlife of Luambe National Park thanks to this community initiative
