Time Frame: 2022 – Ongoing

Partners: Copperbelt University, Chitungulu Foundation

Geographical Range: Luambe Landscape

Project Lead: Tom Riffel, Dr. Moses Chibesa, Chris Brugman

Objectives:

  • Support capacity-building activities in the conservation sector of Zambian citizens
  • Offer employment to local Zambians in the conservation sector

Local leadership and capacity building form integral components for the effective implementation of nature conservation efforts in foreign countries. Despite its modest team size, Nsanga Conservation Zambia is committed to fostering local expertise through various internship opportunities offered to aspiring Zambian naturalists annually. To optimize the learning experience for interns, Nsanga has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with Copperbelt University in Zambia.

Under this collaboration, lecturers from the university select undergraduate or graduate students specializing in Wildlife Management to undertake month-long internships in Luambe National Park with Nsanga in eastern Zambia. This initiative proves particularly beneficial given the university’s location in an industrial area of the country, devoid of significant wildlife areas. Nsanga covers logistical expenses, provides accommodation, and offers a modest salary to support the local interns during their internship, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to nurturing local talent and enhancing conservation capabilities.
