We bring together insights from our conservation science initiatives with the knowledge, experience, and capacities of local communities to co-develop effective conservation actions. By combining scientific evidence with local perspectives and priorities, we work with stakeholders to design and implement solutions that are scientifically grounded, socially acceptable, and community-centric. In this way, research and engagement are translated into practical action that responds to local needs while contributing to long-term biodiversity conservation.
Establishment of Wildlife Corridors
Together with local stakeholder, including NGOs, authorities, private-sector partners, local communities, and traditional leaders, we identify opportunities to protect and restore vital wildlife corridors that connect protected areas. By maintaining these connections, we help prevent habitat fragmentation, safeguard wildlife movements, and preserve genetic diversity and important carbon sinks. At the heart of our approach are the communities living within and around these corridors. We work to ensure that their livelihoods, knowledge, and traditional values are respected, and that local communities are actively involved in corridor management and benefit directly from their protection.
Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
We work with affected communities and local stakeholders to better understand and reduce human-wildlife conflicts. Through comprehensive community consultations, data on conflict hotspots, and scientific assessments of mitigation methods, we identify solutions that are effective and suited to local needs. In close partnership with communities and like-minded stakeholders, we support the implementation of measures such as solar-powered fencing, bee-fencing, and elephant-proof maize granaries, helping to protect both livelihoods and wildlife.
Alternative Livelihoods
Based on community interests, market opportunities, and lessons from successful initiatives in other regions, we support local communities in developing sustainable income-generating activities. By diversifying income streams, these initiatives strengthen livelihoods, increase resilience, and create alternatives to a reliance on cotton farming. Our focus is on community-led opportunities such as eco-tourism, insect farming, and sustainable agriculture, designed to build on local knowledge and resources while contributing to long-term conservation.
